Confucianism and Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee Essay
far-famed groundss of sound out Dee, a detective novel which describes disgust cases which happened in China during the Tang Dynasty, in the 7th Century. In the sacred scripture try out Dee is a intumesce kn hold magistrate of Chang Ping, whom and is famous for solving detestation and maintaining justice, particularly amongst common the Chinese People. In the book, Judge Dee is faced with triad murders. As Judge Dee begins solving the crimes, the story unfolds slowly and presents historical, social, legal, philosophical and til now religious pictures of ancient China. Tang Dynasty China was a period in which society was strongly sourd by Confucianism, due strongly to the previous influence of the Han Dynasty. These Confucian standards within Tang society strongly guide interpersonal consanguinitys throughout the story in the form of pay off bloods in particular, the relationships mingled with fuck off and son, ruler and subject, husband and wife, elder fellow and jr. brother, and the relationship surrounded by friends. These standards of interpersonal relationship strongly emphasized in Confucian belief shimmered major roles throughout the three trials which Judge Dee faced. In order to examine the stories, the Confucius principal should first be discussed in salient depth. Confucius sees social order as a series of status groups and place roles, from the ruler at the top through officials, scholars, gentleman, all the way to the father of the family all with authority over, as well as a certificate of indebtedness to set a good example to those below them. The key fraction of these interpersonal relationships is right relationships (also known as five relationships). These relationships refer to the ties amongst father and son, ruler and subject, husband and wife, elder brother and younger brother, and those surrounded by friends. 1The relationship between father and son, according to Confucius, is that children forever and a day respec t their p bents and p atomic number 18nts always are a moral model for their children. Between ruler and subject, the rulers are responsible for taking oversee of his heap, trust his subject and be a good model, while the subjects should pillow loyal and faithful to their rulers. The husband should share his wife respectfully, while the wife should support thehusband. The elder brother should be a good role model and take good care of and younger maven, while the younger one should respect the older brother (brothers being fraternal to each other). Finally, friends should be secure and trustworthy toward one another. From the five relationship dominion, every person has many roles to play in this life , or in this society, and must obey these five relationships so that the world and the universe can improve toward perfection. These relationships are also convertible and relative. For example, a father in family can also be a subject to the rulers, a friend to other people and meanwhile a son to his find. It s thitherfore believed that every person has a certificate of indebtedness to follow through with their role within society, a c one timept which is clearly upheld by Judge Dee throughout the book.In Celebrated Cases of Judge Dee, on that point are many cases follow the Confucius guide previously mentioned. For example, one of Confucius analects says, In order to increase the peace and harmony in society, charge up the honest and empathetic to office.? ,, 2. Similarly, the Judge Dee story follows this Confucian principle, as attest by the original introduction If, therefore, a judge is honest, then the people in his districts will be at peace.3. If a judge, as a ruler to the people in the lower level, can be honest to the people, then the people will obey and the society can remain in order, as portrayed within the right relationship principle between ruler and subject.Readers can also see this principle applies in the cases which face Judge De e. The story begins with the murder of a travelling silk merchant, whom was traveling with another merchant. The merchants were travelling to raiseher for safety, when one of them murdered the other, sold the dupes possessions, and ran away to live a wealthy life. When caught, the merchant determined all blame on someone else. The relationship portrayed between these two merchants, according to Confucianism, is one between friends (Confucius states that friends should be straight, honest, trustworthy and well informed in order to benefit in life). However, the merchant Shao estimationdifferently. Instead of being a trustworthy and honest friend, he ruins the relationship between friends, and commits the murder, thus creating chaos in society.Another murder case n the story takes place in Huanghua village. A woman, Mrs Djou, had an affair with Mr. Hsu. afterwards Mrs Djou murdered her husband Bee Husn in order to have Mr. Hsu marry her. Mrs. Djou scour gives her little daughter drugs so that her daughter cannot tell on her. Mrs. Bee, Mr.s Djous mother in honor, had been ill since the time of her sons death, though Mrs. Djou neglected this fact and did not try to take care of her. These behaviors bust three principles of the right relationships. First, Mrs. Djou commit a severe crime of cleaning her husband, and broke the relationship between a husband and a wife. Also, she gave drugs to her own daughter, ruining the relationship between the parent and the child. A mother should be a good model and take care of her child, but she failed to do that. Moreover, she ignored Mrs. Bees illness instead of trying to cure her, once again breaking the relationship between parents and children. Mrs. Djou failed to be a mother and here, failed to be a daughter in law. At the end of the case, Judge Dee sentences Mrs. Djou to a painful execution for murdering her husband and having an affair with another man. Mr. Hsu is sentenced to throttling because he took part in the crime of having a affair with Mrs. Djou. However, there is another person who gets punished, Doctor Tang, Mr. Hsus instructor. Dr. Tang is the host teacher of the private school, and lives with all his students, taking charge in the supervision of his pupils. During the tribunal, Judge Dee told Doctor Tang, You, a man of wide learning and many age experience, have failed miserably in your duties as a tutor. The crime of fornication took place in your house, and, as it were, under your very eyes.you are strictly forbidden ever again to engage in the pedagogics of students. 4The Judge then proclaims to Mrs. Bee(though does not in fact punish her), You failed in your duty of supervising the conduct of your daughter-in-law, and consequently two heinous crimes were committed in your house.5 This relates again to the Confucian theory of right relationships. The aged(a) should play his/her role as an older personin the Chinese society, or else the society will go without order, and though Mrs. Bee doesnt get punishment, the linguistic communication Judge Dee says clearly portray interpersonal relationships in Chinese society. end-to-end the story the concept of right relationships is so important that people get punished, or scolded when they fail their Confucian duty. Doctor Tang was both elderly and a teacher, and is therefore responsible as a teacher, mentor, and supervisor in the lives of his students. However, he fails his duty as a teacher. According to the story, because Mrs. Bee and Dr. Tang did not do their duty of watching and guiding the younger ones (daughter in law and students), they indirectly let the crime take place and caused the tragedy.Throughout Celebrated Cases of Jude Dee, the relationship between ruler and ruled, between friends, husband and wife, parents and sons/daughters, the elderly and the younger remains incredibly significant, and continuously guides interpersonal relationships. Those whom did not follow the standards of the ri ght relationships were met with punishment from Judge Dee, strongly exemplifying Confucian morality as a whole, and in many ways portraying a heavy(a) aspect of Tang era society.BibliographyGulik, Robert vanguard. Psychology and Psychiatrist Sigmund Freud Essay
The study of personality is champion of the biggest topics of interest in spite of appearance psychology. There be numerous personality theories that exist making the virtually major ones fall right into at least one of our tetrad major perspectives. These perspectives on personality attempt to describe the antithetic patterns in personality, including how the patterns form and how people differ on individual levels. In my analyse I will go into more in depth head about these major perspectives and afterwards explain to you how changeable or abiding I think my personality is.To start off, there are quad different perspectives. The first is Psychoanalytic Perspective. This perspective emphasizes the importance of early puerility experiences and the unconscious mind. This particular perspective was created by psychiatrist Sigmund Freud who strongly believed that things that are hidden in the unconscious could be revealed in numerous different ways. However the Neo-Freudian t heorists only agreed in the importance of the unconscious, but disagreed with new(prenominal) aspects of Freuds theories. The second perspective is called The Humanistic Perspective. This focuses on psychological growth, bare(a) will, and my favorite, personal awareness. This perspective is my favorite because it takes a more positive panorama on human nature and is centered on how each person can achieve their individual potential. The third perspective is called The Trait Perspective. This one is centered on identifying, describing, and measuring certain traits that make up a humans personality. By knowing and understanding this, researchers have stick to believe that they can now better comprehend the differences between individuals. The go away perspective is The Social Cognitive Perspective. This one emphasizes the major importance of observational learning, self-efficiency, situational influences and cognitive processes. Now as far as explaining how changeable or unchangea ble I think my own personality is, my personality sincerely depends on who you are, what day it is, what went on that day, and in a lot of cases what affable of mood Im in.
Jay Gatsby-Pathetic or Romantic Essay
Jay Gatsby, doubtlessly the most love-stricken character in The Great Gatsby, has shown moments of both hopeless ro manhoodce and over-obsessiveness. He has based the past five years on a woman whom he has met only once and might never execute again. His unrealistic dream of someday courting this golden girl has clouded his mind and made him act only in pursuit of this fantasy.Jay Gatsby is a pathetic character because he allowed himself to be consumed by his illusion that he and Daisy might ever suppress up together. Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay. A stalker is defined as a somebody who follows or observes a person persistently, especially out of coercion or derangement, Jay Gatsbys scrapbook with a lot of clippings and pictures about Daisy shows that he has been following, and keeping lede of, her movements for quite some time.At this point in the story, the question of mark might come into play, a person who favored Gatsby as a romantic can argue that perhaps he meant to give the scrapbook as a gift to Daisy when he saw her again, however, there is also a more menacing interpretation of this event, a man sitting in his living room feverishly hunting through newspapers and magazines for a glimpse of, or a story about, his prey. His collection actually shows the depravity and hopelessness of a pathetic man.Resorting to an attempt at bribery to get what he wants is another way for Gatsby to show that there is no limit to what he would do to meet Daisy again. Again, the argument could be made that Gatsby was simply onerous to help a friend, yet if Nick did not begin something he coveted, contact with Daisy, Gatsby never would have offered to help Nick pick up a nice bit of money. Nick may have denied Gatsbys help, but he did set up a meeting in the midst of Daisy and Gatsby. At Nicks house, before Daisys arrival, Gatsby is in a fervor trying to make the house acceptable for the meeting.Perhaps this was an attemp t to seem honorable of her attention but more likely, this was Gatsby trying to look more primal than he actually is, as was his flashy introduction to his home. Trying besides hard to impress someone is definitely a pathetic act. I know of nothing more despicable and pathetic than a man who devotes all the hours of the waking day to the making of money for moneys sake. John D. Rockefeller. The same could be said about a person who devotes five years of his life on a longshot. His dream is a longshot because in order for it to work, Daisy must be unhappy with her marriage affluent to want to give up a life of luxury for a life of love. While she flirts with Gatsby, she is just doing it to get back at tom for having an affair. While she may appear to be discontent with her marriage, she would never truly want to give up living in the lap of luxury. Everything Gatsby did in the past five years was based on the dream that he and Daisy would be together, a romantic gesture but in the end a pathetic decision for a pathetic man.

How could this affect our lives today, and to a greater extent importantly tomorrow?Mann is an innovator, a man who excels in the field of technology. He had created a portable CD pseud before they were officially marketed, in time he began working on a portable computer that would allow him to access any of the information he needed. He even created a program that would replace ads on bilboards with things he felt were more important, and that he wanted to see. Some may wonder when this technology may be available but the concomitant of the matter is, it is available. It is all around us, Mann began experimenting with portability and computer in 1987.It is now the year 2013, and the technology has developped at an exponential rate, with the release of Google Glass we will be able to liv e the focal point Mann lived, replacing ads we dont want to see with other(a) things that interest us. With the route government is taking these technologies might end up being used against us, inventions like Google Glass will permit the government to have 24/7 surveillance of everything we do. Countries have slowly been turning into care states, all illusions of privacy are slowly being taken out-of-door and we are doing nothing to change this. The population has been made docile, we sit at home on computers and walk around with phone in decease while the world around us closes in slowly suffocate us until we can no longer catch our breath. Soon adequate all of this technology will be implemented into our bodies, turning us into, basically, cyborgs. arouse we expect to live life like Mr. Roboto, becoming the current man. Imagine seeing Robocop prowling the streets for miscreants while we all access our own personal HUD the song that is playing. These are the things we can come to expect, along with a human body of severe problems cyber terrorism, iruss, trojan horses, key stroke programs (that is to say, in this context, a program able to acces your mind and watch everything you do). How will these issues be solved is a mystery as it is nearly impossible to eradicate and salve up with the number of programs that are being made even today. leave the human race become more machine than man? Do we really want to take this direction with technologie, considering the repercussions of much(prenominal) an act and the sacrifice involved? It may be safe to say that we may be going too far. Although the technological advancements we are creating are phenomenal we cannot expect them to be used to only improve our lives it is a well known fact that the human race is a suicidal creature, and seems to be addicted to finding new and more efficient ship canal to kill eachother. That being said the technological era we are pitiable into brings a great many benefits to society, and to the army. The militirization of these innovations will be inevitable. This can be both seen as good and bad, depending on your point of view.War oftentimes incites change and pumps up the economy, although with these technologies we will be experiencing a different shape of war, one that could quite po ssibly affect us all. What will give to these technologies in the coming years is somewhat of a mystery, perhaps Johny mnemonic will be the world of tomorrow, those who chose to augment themselves versus those who did not. This technology brings a number of opportunities to better our lives, we will be able to improve our life bridge circuit and cure more illness and disease, amputees will be able to live normally and those with ental dissabilities may be cured with the use of microchips. With the direction we are taking concerning technology we will have to come to expect that the government will take advantage of these technologies, with profit in mind, and it is very likelly that the odd distribution of wealth and power will be easily discrete in the world of tomorrow. It is impossible to know exactly what the future holds and so we must simply do what we can today, to ensure that tomorrow is the way we want it too be. With that said, how far away are we from being able to se e into the future?

Research Proposal on Obesity
About one in five Ameri tummy kids is grievous enough to be considered rotund (Parr 45). fleshiness being 20% or to a gr eradicateer extent grueling, is considered a disease because it is associated with so many healthfulness problems, like heart disease and diabetes. Being obese as a boor usu wholey places into being obese by dint of adulthood. One third of adults be obese, and a third of these got that way in tykehood (Parr 53). That is why it is so important to keep kids from decent overweight and to help obese kids lose weight. The increase number of obese p atomic number 18nts, technology, children having no supervision aft(prenominal) teach, and the unhealthy content of sh on the wholeow lunches are to point for the increasing number of overweight kids in the United States. A bulk of the information used in writing this paper came from obesity antecedent books, magazine articles, and websites devoted to helping children lose weight. Decades ago children would pl ay tag, stick around at bikes, and participate in other outdoor after school activities spare-time activity a nutritious snack prepared for them by one of their parents.Today, close to children be space to an empty house, snack on any fling they can find, and watch television or play pictorial matter games until their parents get home hours later. With no supervision, who can blame them? The diets offered at schools select changed as well. Candy, chips, and soda are a favorite of most children when expeling their school lunch. Vending machines are now in most cafeterias today too, do it purge easier for children to snack in the beginning and after lunch.America is one of the most overweight populations in the world, and we wholly wonder why. The following paper examines the kickoff causes of this public health problem, answers the question of why, and offers possible solutions, to this crisis. Society as a whole is more overweight than ever before, causing their l ight eating and exercising habits to be passed down onto their children.Of course genetics plays a part in any(prenominal) cases of obesity children, hardly for the most part, it is very more an issue of the habits that kids pick up from their parents. If some(prenominal) parents are obese, their child has an 80% chance of being obese, if one parent is obese, their child has a 40% chance of being obese, and if neither parent is obese, their child has lonesome(prenominal) a 5% chance of being obese (Bray 68). Shared family ways such(prenominal) as eating and activity habits influence a childs body weight. When a child sees their mom or dad eating unhealthy nourishments all the time, and snacking throughout the day, that child pull up stakes get used to that eating traffic pattern and follow in the footsteps of their parents.Overweight parents in like manner tend to cook gamy calorie intellectual nourishments and order out more than thinner parents. This is bad because no t totally does that child eat nutrients high in full-bodied throughout their whole childhood, but they also pick up the high-fat style of provision as well. If a parent is overweight, it might not be as huge of a priority for them to get their child into shape. Even if it is, the limit to which they can exercise with them is limited. It is a key factor when your child is overweight to get them active as well as to sawn-off down the amount of fat in their diet. But you must carefully cut down the fat in their diet. Reducing fat is a nigh way to cut calories without depriving your child of nutrients. Simple ways to cut the fat in your familys diet include eating low-fat or even better, non-fat dairy products, poultry without the skin, and lean meats, and low-fat or fat-free breads and cereals. Making gnomish changes to your familys diet is a good, healthy way to help your child lose weight. It is also good to involve your child in food shopping and preparing repasts. This teach es children about nutrition, and gives them a feeling of accomplishment.Physical education is only part of the solution. Just as parents reinforce good reading habits, they also should encour succession their children to incorporate physical activity into their day-after-day lives according to Judy Young, administrator director of NASPE. The national Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) in Reston, Va. , recently issued guidelines recommending that children ages six to eleven exercise a minimum of xxx to sixty minutes per day. The problem with this is that in todays tonestyle, it is the norm for both parents to be in possession of careers and work full time. This means that theyre children will come home to an empty house after school. Our society consists of households where both parents work and their children are left to fend for and feed themselves after school. accord to a new-fashioned Urban Institute report, An estimated four million grade-school age chi ldren are regularly without adult supervision. Another shocking fact is that in California, six percent of 6-9 year olds and thirty two percent of 10 12 year olds average five hours unsupervised each week, or with a sibling under the age of 13.Research shows that children who draw a lot of time alone are more likely to have social and academic problems (HHS Press Office). When children come home from school the low thing on their agenda is food. What does the normal everyday child wrap up for when mom and dad arent around? A nutritious snack, or the cookie jar and a bag of Doritos. Marvin Moss, Capital-Journal columnist, states that To many of you, This may not seem like a major event, but put yourself in a kids shoes. I know when mine come home from school, the first thing they expect is food. I call their after school eating habit pre-dinner. If one of us parents wasnt home when they start outd home from school, how would they be made to eat a healthy pre-diner snack? Sna cks take up most of the calories in childrens diets and lead to them becoming overweight. Total daily intake from snacks among children has feelern from an average of 450 to 600 in the support two decades ,according to researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While some snacks are healthy for children and give them nutrients and energy, most snacks are usually a source of high-calorie, low-nutrient foods like soda, potato chips, and cookies. After they have picked out their snack, they go for the television and sit on the couch while all of their favorite shows come on. Its either the television or the computer or eight-fold video games. There are so many alternative choices for kids straightaway other than physical activities. There is always a new video game or an upgraded computer toy, and not to mention all of the new shows that come out every season. Along with the hundreds of shows that kids watch after school come the numerous food commercials advert ising pizza, soda, and candy making kids minds change by reversal to food yet again.Technology has advanced so much in the last few decades coming out with many new high-tech, entertain things for kids to play with. All of the new technology is fascinating, but is it a conjunction that Americas weight problem is expanding along side all the new technology coming out? NO. It is no coincidence. In America, kids spend an average of 21 hours per week in front of the television, and if a child adds 5 hours to that per week, he or she is ten percent more likely to become obese (Parr 97). Children are larger because American life has changed. much children sit in front of video monitors than on bicycles or playing sports. According to a Nielsen Media Research Report, Aside from the time kids spend watching television ,they spend another triple to four hours daily with the internet and video games (Karas 47). According to The gists for Disease Control (CDC) and the National Center for H ealth Statistics, in 1999 over 9 million or 15 percent of American children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 18 were overweight, or soprano what the percentage was in 1990 (Parenting Today ).This problem is way out to continue to rise over the years if our country doesnt put more sweat into stopping it. Leaving your child unattended after school and during the pass is a factor not as harmless as everyone thought. Lois Salsbury, chairwoman of Children Now, states that While the United States has restructured its economy, analysis of the impact on working families is smooth in its infancy. Hundreds of thousands of children are spending time alone. Is this what we want in equipment casualty of safety and developing our children? Our nation is developing as our parenting skills are deteriorating. We want so much to be wealthy and powerful that we neglect to understand what it is doing to our children. Parents need to realize what is happening to their children and gain control over what their kids eat and how much time they spend sitting around if this problem is going to be reversed. Another area that needs focusing on is the food available for kids to buy while at school. U. S. Surgeon General Richard Carmona, has declare childhood obesity a national epidemic (Mayer 23). The Oakland School territory banned the sale of sugary drinks and candy in vending machines. The Los Angeles structured School District, the second largest in the country, followed several weeks later (27). School lunches are not meeting up to the nutritious standards that they should. Vending machines are in almost every elementary school offering kids the opportunity to eat candy, chips, and soda at any time of the school day. The lunches offered usually have one healthy meal and the rest consist of things like pizza, quit steaks, and mozzarella sticks. Is this what we want our kids eating all day? Legislators introduced several bills aimed at eefing up physical education r equirements and fixing up school lunch programs. Gov. gray-headed Davis signed a bill in October that prohibits the sale of junk food in elementary schools and bans soda at middle schools (32). This needs to be done everywhere. There is no questions that school meal programs have a powerful influence on childrens future food choices. More than half of youth in the United States eat one to three major meals in school (Owl 27). Adequate nutrition throughout the day plays an important performance at school and enables children to make wise choices when eating.Kids who go hungry or are only allowed a hurried meal through the morning or afternoon are likely to arrive at home after school extremely hungry. This can lead to overeating particularly high-fat, easy to prepare snack foods. This pattern of behavior is difficult to change and can lead to obesity. Providing healthy meals at a pleasant environment at school is an important part of obesity prevention (29). Many school lunch progr ams offer fast food as an alternative. Limit your childs participation in unhealthy school lunch programs.Parents should ban together and speak with their school boards about improving school lunch programs. School districts should remove the vending machines from their schools and make the lunches offered healthier. So much money is spent every year on obesity programs for children and all that money could be saved if schools would just do their part in solving the problem. There is no more compelling reminder of the health implications than the $127 million spent each year in hospital be related to childhood obesity, according to the Centers for Disease control and Prevention. nearly things are being done to start solving the problem but not enough. If everyone works together this battle can be overcome. The increasing number of obese parents, technology, unsupervised children after school, and unhealthy school lunches are to blame for the increasing number of overweight kids in the United States. These factors can all be helped and prevented. This problem must be fixed before it gets worse. Our nation must united and work together for the sake and well being of our children.
